Friday, Saturday & Sunday, May 4-6, 2007 - West Oaks Mall Event

We hope that you were able to come over to the West Oaks Mall and join us as we kicked-off our first event celebrating the partnership between our affiliate and the mall.  The event took place on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  We were very excited to be working together and look forward to future events.

For each dollar donated, folks were able to sign 2x4's that will be used in our next home construction.  They were then able to remove a "family portrait" from the panel to represent helping to eliminate substandard housing in West Orange County.  A big Thank You goes out to all who donated.   Click here to see photos from the event.

Saturday & Sunday, April 14 & 15, 2007 - 10:00 am to 6:00 pm - Festival Among the Lakes, Camp Down, Windermere, FL

The Rotary of Windermere sponsored their annual Festival Among the Lakes.  They had a boat raffle, food booths, boat show, art show and other raffles that will benefit local charities; West Orange Habitat being one of them.  We had a booth at the festival and enjoyed seeing everyone who stopped by during the festivities.  The park was open both days from 10 am to 6 pm.   Saturday was an absolutely beautiful day; unfortunately we can't say the same about Sunday.   A storm front came in and made the morning a rainy mess with high winds, thunder and lightning, and a cold front on it's heels.

We want to thank everyone who came out to volunteer at our booth and those who "just came out" for helping to make this annual event a success!

Saturday, February 24, 2007 -  9:00 a.m. "The House That Jack Built" for the Jackman Family Groundbreaking

West Orange Habitat for Humanity and The Rotary of Windermere held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the start of House #21, being built in Winter Garden, FL.  It took place on Saturday, February 24, 2007.  This is the third Habitat home sponsored by the Rotary and the seventh home to be built in Winter Garden.  We are very excited to be working with both of them again.  This home will also be known as "The House That Jack Built" in memory of John R. (Jack) Fain, a past president of WOHFH and the Rotary. This home is being built for Fernando and Karen Jackman and their two sons.

The groundbreaking was open to the public and we welcomed all those who were able to attend.  Construction began immediately following the ceremony.  A special thank you goes out to the following people for making this day special:  Nick Shannin, President of WOHFH; Pastor Anthony Hodge of Finding the Lost Sheep Ministry; Julia Strimple, President of the Rotary of Windermere; Charlie May Wilder, Commissioner of Winter Garden; and Marjorie Fain, wife of the late Jack Fain.

We also want to acknowledge Julia Strimple and the Rotary of Windermere for the presentation of a check for $10,000.00 to Nick Shannin to be used for the construction of this home.   Their continued support of our efforts is greatly appreciated.

The building team for this project will be primarily made up of members of Habitat volunteers and all are encouraged and welcome to participate.  The building site is 816 Magnolia St., Winter Garden, FL.

Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - Jerry Van Dyke 3/10/1938 - 2/14/2007

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jerry Van Dyke.  Jerry was one of the founding members of our affiliate, a past president, board member and building superintendent.  He was also a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Windermere, and a great supporter of the West Orange community.  His contributions to West Orange County are too numerous to list here.  He was a wonderful humanitarian, husband, father and friend.  His presence and enthusiasm will be missed by many.

Services will be held Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Windermere, 300 N. Main Street, Windermere, FL.  His family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to West Orange Habitat for Humanity or the West Orange Christian Service Center.

We Will Miss You, Jerry
